I'll work on this piece over the long weekend so it'll be ready for the critique. The hair is by far the most difficult part because I'd like to show the texture and some strands, but drawing dark objects is difficult in ink. and there's so much of it :(!

ReactionMost of the work Yuko Shimizu does is very colorful, which is effective for the commissions she does for clients such as DC, but I chose a couple of her personal pieces to focus on. I appreciate how she thought of these works in terms of the entire series, especially for Beginning 101 because they were displayed as one piece. One of the goals Mr. Carter and I set at the last critique was to continue working in series, and my current in-class project is a pair of drawings which are intended to be displayed together. I think what I could learn from Shimizu is organization composition for individual pieces so that they can be harmoniously displayed together but still be a solid individual work if needed. I admire her use of space and how she doesn't draw in the entire space but fills it.
I'm back to ink! I'm deciding to go more in the direction of where my Scholastics portfolio was headed. This will be one piece in a two-part series. The other half will be of a plant I have whose vines drape down a shelf. Once I finish both, it'll be a pair of vine-like pieces depicting growth.
Notes
ReflectionIn my college process, I didn't apply for any art programs, and I have no intention of pursuing art in college. Looking forward, I don't see art having a larger role in my career or in my studies than it does now. I like the concept of self-guided, studio-based studies, but I know that I wouldn't have the drive or passion to be willing to pursue it. Bailey, in UVA Architecture, was an interesting contrast to my own journey because he lost interest in politics after the 2016 election. I ended up discovering my interest in politics and government because of the 2018 election. When I was deciding on a major to declare for colleges, I tossed around the idea of art history as a path to studying law in provenance but never considered an art school or program. It was strange because I still had the experience of building a portfolio as a supplement for some colleges, Most everyone was driven by passion, so that confirmed my decision to not apply for art programs.
